How to Improve Your Gas Mileage and Save Money

Since Alberta recently implemented the carbon tax, making the price of diesel and gas rise just over 4%, we all want to save some money by improving our fuel efficiency. Here are a few tips to follow to save you some money at the gas pump:

1. Slow Down

For safety reasons you should always drive the speed limit but following the speed limit can also help your fuel efficiency. Whenever you can use your cruise control take advantage of it to help you save gas as well.

2. Start and Stop Slowly

If you constantly squeal away from a red light and come to a screeching halt at a stop sign, then you are greatly dropping your fuel efficiency. As you approach a light that has been green for a long time, gradually tap on your brake to come to a gradual stop. When the light turns green, gently press on the gas and gradually speed up.

3. Check Your Tire Pressure

Check your owner’s manual or side door sticker to determine what the recommended tire pressure is for your vehicle. Test your tire pressure regularly to keep it as close to the recommended value as possible to help improve your fuel efficiency.

4. Clean Out Your Car

Do you have unnecessary items in your car that are adding extra weight? Remove it – this means your roof rack as well. The less your vehicle weighs, the more fuel efficient it will be.

5. Have Your Oil Changed Regularly

You should have your vehicle’s oil changed once every 5,000 – 10,000km. Doing so will keep your oil clean and help your engine work more efficiently and this will improve your gas mileage.

6. Plug In Your Vehicle

When the temperature reaches below -15°C, you should plug your vehicle in. This will reduce the strain on your vehicle when you start it and will help your fuel efficiency.

7. Don’t Idle Your Vehicle

New cars don’t require time to idle before you start driving them. They will warm up as you drive them so as long as your commute is far enough away that your vehicle warms up, you can skip the idle time and save money at the pump.

8. Are You Regular?

Check your owner’s manual to find out what type of gas is recommended for your vehicle. Most vehicles only require regular gas so by skipping the premium gas, you can save a bundle.

9. Use Apps

Use an app like Gas Buddy to find the cheapest gas in your area and to find out when the gas prices are expected to rise and fall.

If you follow these tips, you’ll notice that your car will run better and your gas gauge won’t dip as low as quickly.
