What Should You Do If Your Car’s A/C Unit Fails?

When the temperature outside rises, one of the most typical reasons to take your car in for service is that the air conditioner isn't working properly.

While a simple A/C recharge of your vehicle's air conditioning system may remedy the problem when the refrigerant level drops too low, this is not always the case.

The air conditioning system in your vehicle may require a recharge, at which point we may inject a UV dye to help us locate the source of any future leaks.

Since the gas that is used to recharge your air conditioner makes it more difficult to see the location of a leak, we will need to use the UV dye to locate it (unless it is a really big leak and more obvious).

It's not always a leak or a need to recharge the A/C system; other factors affecting air temperature could be at play. These factors include a compressor clutch that isn't engaging; this could be identified by hearing a noise when you turn on the AC, which could indicate this needs repair or replacement. A loose compressor belt or a dirty condenser could also affect your vehicle’s air temperature.

Some Other Situations That Call for Auto A/C Service:

· When the air is cool, but the airflow is weak or uneven

· When just part of the vents in your car are blowing cold air

  • The cabin air filter is clogged
  • The air conditioner's blower motor has stopped working
  • The mix door could be at blame for the lack of airflow

What is an A/C Recharge?

A recharge of the air conditioning system simply entails adding more refrigerant to the system.

Changing the Freon in the air conditioner is a regular maintenance task, especially for older cars. The type of refrigerant used in most newer vehicles, reduces the frequency with which the system must be refilled.

If your brand-new car regularly requires more A/C refrigerant than usual, you probably have a leak in the system. Most vehicles only require an A/C recharge once every seven years, but older cars may need one more frequently.

No matter what the issue is, we'll figure it out and get you back on the road safely.
