Ball Joint Repair and Diagnostics

Ball Joint Repair and Diagnostics In Whitehorse

About Ball Joint Repair and Diagnostics

Ball joints are a critical part of your vehicle's suspension system; they are ball-and-socket joints between your vehicle's control arm and the steering knuckle. These joints act as the "pivot" point between the wheels and the rest of your suspension when you turn left or right (or otherwise turn your wheels). Your vehicle may have upper ball joints and lower ball joints, which attach at different areas and bear different loads.

Your ball joints will be located on the end of control arms. Because ball joints need to be pressed into a control arm, replacement parts for ballpoints often come pre-attached to control arms in an assembly. For this reason, your auto specialist may recommend replacing the control arm at the same time as replacing the ball joints.

When you need expert advice, you can count on the team at Integra Tire Whitehorse to get your vehicle up and running in tip-top shape.

Why Ball Joints Are Important

When a ball joint fails, your wheel is free to move in whatever direction it wants! If you've ever seen a vehicle on the side of the road with its wheel broken off and laying flat, a ball joint snapping was the likely cause!

Troubling Signs

Some of the telltale signs of a failing ball joint include:

  • Clunking noises when you turn or go over bumps
  • Vibration from the front of the vehicle that seems disproportionate
  • Uneven wear on your tires, meaning the inside of your tire is more worn than the outside (or vice versa). This is because your tire is wandering to one edge as your ball joint is not keeping your wheel straight.
  • Steering pulling to one side or the other can be the result of your ball joint giving excessive play and pull.

How Do we Diagnose?

Failing ball joints can be easily detected via a road test followed by a physical and visual inspection. A skilled technician will be able to easily test your ball joints by hand, feeling for irregularities in movement.
