Summer Car Problems

Driving in the summer may seem like a breeze compared to winter driving but there are still problems that can arise. We’ve compiled a list of items to be aware of and how to fix them:

Windshield chips – Rocks can fly at your windshield all summer long so be sure to check your windshield regularly for chips – especially check the lower areas of your windshield that are more conspicuous. Fluctuations in temperature can cause the little chip to turn into a huge crack so you want to get chips filled as soon as possible.
Air conditioning failure – Air conditioners can wear and its blower motor could go. It could also develop a leak. If you notice that your air conditioning isn’t blowing very hard or very cold, then you should have it inspected.
Oil change overdue – Your oil should be changed once every 5,000 – 10,000km. If you’re due for one, the summer months are the perfect time to bring your vehicle in to your local Integra Tire Auto Centre.
Driving with winter tires – Winter tires are produced to be used when the temperature is below 7° If you use winter tires in the hot summer months, your winter tires will wear down much more quickly and reduce your fuel economy from the friction they create with the hot road. We recommend having one set of all-season tires that you use when it’s above 7°C and a set of winter tires to use when it’s below 7°C.
Weak battery – Extreme heat can cause corrosion on your battery. Test it once a season to ensure that it has optimum voltage. Batteries generally last for four to five years so if yours is close to that age, bring it to your local Integra Tire to have it tested.
Running out of gas – You may think that running low on gas isn’t as big of a deal in the summer as the winter but being stranded on the side of the road is dangerous no matter the time of year. Make sure that your tank is full before leaving for a long road trip and map out where the next gas station is. Our location in Whitehorse, Yukon has a gas station!
Worn wipers – Windshield wipers generally last only one year. Ice and snow from the winter months can quickly wear out wipers. If yours cause streaks across your windshield, then it’s time to replace them.
Under or over inflated tires – You should check your tire pressure monthly or before any long road trips. Tire pressure can fluctuate depending on the temperature so you should check it early in the morning when the tires are cool. To determine what PSI your tires should be set to, check your owner’s manual or the sticker on your side door.
Weird smells – If an unknown smell is coming from your vehicle, and it’s not the rotting banana peel your child left in the backseat, then it could be that you are due for a cabin air filter change. These should be changed every 15,000 – 30,000km. Check your owner’s manual to determine the period for your specific vehicle.
Overheated engine – If your radiator, water pump, thermostat, fan, belt or hose fails in the summer, then your car could overheat. To prevent this, make sure to regularly check your oil and coolant levels. You should also inspect your belts and hoses for any cracks or bulges. You can also bring your vehicle into your local Integra Tire auto Centre for a vehicle inspection.
