Tips for Navigating Pothole Season

All Canadians know what spring means – pothole season, when the pesky fluctuations in temperature in the spring cause the cement to break apart and develop craters in the road. Potholes can cause serious damage to your vehicle by puncturing your tire or misaligning your wheels. We want to ensure that no potholes harm your vehicle this spring, so here are some tips to help you navigate the pothole season:

Avoid Potholes, If You Can – Keeping your eyes on the road and being aware of an upcoming pothole is your best defense. Safely change lanes to avoid a pothole or avoid roads that are commonly known for being plagued with them.

Slow Down – If you’re unable to avoid the pothole, slow down as much as you can before you drive over it. The faster you drive over the pothole, the more likely it is to cause damage to your vehicle. It is also important to brake before the pothole and not while you’re driving over it because this could cause more damage to your vehicle.

Drive with Proper Tire Inflation – Keeping your tires inflated to the recommended PSI will help you to drive over potholes and avoid excessive damage to your vehicle. You can find your vehicle’s recommended tire PSI by checking your owner’s manual or the sticker on your side door.

Steer Firmly – If you are a person who likes to steer with only one hand, you may want to try using both hands during pothole season. Getting a good grip on the steering wheel will help you quickly navigate around potholes or keep your vehicle straight if you do hit one.

Report Potholes – If there is a road littered with potholes or if you come across a huge pothole, report it to your city as soon as possible. Your city will be able to mend the potholes much sooner if you report them.

Respect the Construction – Don’t let construction frustrate you. Remember that your city is out fixing the roads to make them safer for you to drive on!

If you do hit a pothole and think that it may have damaged your vehicle, be sure to bring it into your local Integra Tire so we can help you fix it.
